Marden, Wiltshire history
A settlement of 29 households and one mill was recorded at Meresdene in Domesday Book of 1086. Holders of Marden manor included Gilbert Basset and his brothers Fulk (bishop of London) and Philip, all in the 13th century; and Hugh le Despenser the elder from 1298 to 1326. Later holders included the earls of Abingdon in the 17th and 18th centuries.
