Development as a housing estate began in the 1930s, with construction on Brackensdale Avenue, Greenland Avenue, Lilac Avenue and Laburnum Grove. Most of the area was developed during the 1950s (the first house completed in 1953) and it was one of the largest housing estates to be built in the city.
