The historian William Harris was preacher at the village’s Presbyterian chapel from 1741 to 1770. The painter Robert Polhill Bevan (1865-1925) painted a number of views of the neighbourhood. Luppitt photo Mohuns Ottery
Mohuns Ottery was a seat of the Carew family from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The old manor house burnt down in 1868 and was completely rebuilt as a farmhouse. The ruins of a mid-16th century gatehouse lie to the south of the house. In January 2014 the house with 228 acres was offered for sale for £3.5 million.
