Lowesby is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as containing two plough teams consisting of five men each. The manor was held from Countess Judith, a niece of William the Conqueror, by a Norman named Hugh Burdet. The Burdets founded Loseby parish church and gave its advowson to the Order of St Lazarus. Relations soured in about 1290 when the Order started to appropriate part of the parish’s tithes.

Lowesby geography / climate

Lowesby Parish is located 500 metres above sea level in a relatively hilly region. Other than Queniborough brook there are no other sites of topographic interest in the area. The geology of the area is predominantly Lower Jurassic Mudstones and minor carbonates.

Burrough Court Burrough Court was once the site of a large country house of which only the stable yard, chauffeur’s and grooms’ quarters remain. The remaining buildings have now been converted into office suites, meeting rooms and a conference centre.

Lowesby Hall Lowesby Hall is a large Grade II* Georgian mansion. It is a famous fox-hunting seat in the heart of the Quorn country. The poem by William Bromley Davenport (1821–1884) was a parody on Alfred Tennyson’s 1835 poem Locksley Hall.

Quenby Hall Quenby Hall is a Jacobean house in parkland near the villages of Cold Newton and Hungarton, Leicestershire. It is described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as “the most important early-seventeenth century house in the county”
