On 1 April 1935 the parish of Swell was abolished and merged with Upper Swell to form Swell. Swell became Swell in 1935.

Origin of the name

“Swell” means “burning”, or “funeral pile” The name is believed to have been the name of a battle fought by Offa of Mercia in the vicinity of Lower Swell . Another theory is that it relates to a spring that rises in the grounds of the Abbotswood Estate to the north of the village .
