Lower Darwen history
Lower Darwen was a farming area until the end of the eighteenth century. The first cotton mill in the village was built about the year 1774, by Mr. Thomas Eccles, yeoman and manufacturer. By the 1820s, the majority of the village had been involved in the textile industry. The village has expanded rapidly since the 1980s with many new houses being built.
