The name derives from Old English hlose a pig and stoc meaning a farm. Another source suggested that the name is derived from Celtic, llostog meaning beaver. It has been variously recorded as Lostoc in 1212; Lastok in 1279; Lostoke in 1292; Lostock in 1301 and Lostock and Lostocke in the 16th century.

Rumworth Lodge Reservoir is a large shallow reservoir in Bolton, Greater Manchester. It is located to the west of Bolton’s A58 (Beaumont Road) and to the South-East of Lostock railway station. Water from the reservoir is not used for drinking water but provides compensation water so that the Middlebrook, which downstream becomes the River Croal, never runs dry.
