Ilford was formed in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963. It was formed as a merger of the former areas of Essex and Essex. The former town hall is now known as Redbridge Town Hall. The area was transferred from Essex to London by the Act.

The name comes from a bridge over the River Roding which was demolished in 1921. The name had first been applied to the Redbridge area and Redbridge tube station was opened in 1947.
