Llanrothal was once a stronghold of the Jesuits and Papists such as Henry Milbourne. The house became the headquarters of the Jesuit mission in South Wales in the early 17th century. It remained an important Catholic centre until its discovery and sacking by the Bishop of Hereford in 1678.
