Llangollen history
Llangollen takes its name from the Welsh llan meaning “a religious settlement” and Saint Collen, a 7th-century monk who founded a church beside the river. Above the town to the north is Castell Dinas Brân, a stronghold of the Princes of Powys. Beyond the castle is the impressive Lower Carboniferous limestone escarpment known as the Eglwyseg Rocks. Valle Crucis Abbey was established at Llantysilio in about 1201.

Dee Rocks is a local fundraising music festival, usually held during May when the town hall is transformed into a music venue. The inaugural event took place on 29 May 2004, and the now annual fixture raises in excess of £12,000.

According to an anonymous rhyme, the bridge over the Dee is one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. The nursery rhyme “Mary had a little lamb” is frequently, but incorrectly, linked with Llangollen. Its true origins are in the United States.

Pillar of Eliseg
The Pillar of Eliseg stands near Valle Crucis Abbey, Denbighshire, Wales. It was erected by Cyngen ap Cadell, king of Powys, in honour of his great-grandfather Elisedd ap Gwylog.
Valle Crucis Abbey
Valle Crucis Abbey was built in 1201 by Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor, Prince of Powys Fadog. The abbey was dissolved in 1537 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Castell Dinas Brân is a medieval castle occupying a prominent hilltop site above the town of Llangollen in Denbighshire, Wales. The presently visible castle was probably built in the 1260s by Gruffydd Maelor II, a prince of Powys Fadog, on the site of several earlier structures, including an Iron Age hillfort.
Pontfadog Oak
The Pontfadog Oak was a sessile oak tree (Quercus petraea) that stood on Cilcochwyn farm above the village of PontFadog, in the Ceiriog Valley west of Chirk in the county borough of Wrexham, Wales, until it was blown over in the early hours of 18 April 2013. At the time it was reputed to be the oldest and largest oak tree in the UK.
Llangollen Bridge
Llangollen Bridge is built across the River Dee in North-east Wales. It is listed as one of the seven wonders of Wales and is a Grade I listed building. There has been a bridge across the Dee since at least 1284, though the current bridge appears to date to the 16th or 17th century.
St Collen’s Church, Llangollen
St Collen’s Church is a parish church in the town of Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales. The first church on the site was founded by Collen in the 6th century. A new church was built in the 13th century, in the Early English Gothic style. This was developed in succeeding centuries, and then almost completely rebuilt in the 19th Century.
