Llandyssil history


In the Medieval period Llandyssil was in the Cantref of Cedewain in the Kingdom of Powys. The parish was divided into four townships: Bolbro, Bronywood (or Bronycoed), Bryntalch and Rhandir. In 1536, following the Act of Union, it became part of the new county of Montgomeryshire. For ecclesiastical administration, the parish was in Bishopric of St Asaph, Archdeaconry of Montgomery and Deanery of Cedwain. For Parliamentary representation, it fell within the County of Montgomery until 1885.

Hen Domen Welsh, meaning “old mound”, is the site of a medieval timber motte-and-bailey castle in Powys, Wales. The original Montgomery Castle was built by Roger de Montgomery in 1070. From 1105 the castle was the home of the de Boulers (Bowdler) family, and Montgomery gets its Welsh name, Trefaldwyn.
