In the 1870s, Little Thurlow was described as: a parish, with a village, in Risbridge district, Suffolk; 4½ miles N of Haverhill r. station. It has a post-office under Newmarket station, and the living is a rectory in the diocese of Ely. At this time, the majority of people employed were men, apart from in domestic services. The First World War claimed the lives of ten villagers who were enlisted, with another four from the village losing their lives in the Second World War.
