The green was traditionally the site of cattle and sheep fairs, but these were stopped in the 19th century by a vicar opposed to bull baiting. The market cross, dating from 1500, has engraved on its shaft the initials HCIW, dated 1675. Silk Mill Lane derives its name from a silk mill powered by a waterwheel which once stood adjacent to where the brook crosses the Lane.

Sites of special interest

Preston City Council designated eight buildings in the village as sites of special interest in 2011. Inglewhite Church, The Green Man, Manor House Farm and Farm Cottages were designated sites of interest.

Inglewhite etymology

Inglewhite means ‘white fire’, from Gaelic aingeal meaning ‘fire’ It is thought to refer to will-o’-the-wisps that were once prevalent on the village green.
