Ilton history

“The settlement on the River Isle” was one of the possessions of Athelney Abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries. Ilford Bridge probably dates from the early 18th century when it was on the Curry Rivel to Chard turnpike road.

Historic estates

The last of the Wadham family in direct male line was Nicholas Wadham who founded Wadham College, Oxford in 1610. The Wyndham family inherited the estate of Merryfield and the “Wyndham Estate” is still today the largest employer in Ilton.

All Saints Church, Isle Brewers All Saints Church is a Church of England parish church in Isle Brewers, Somerset. Designed by Charles Edmund Giles, it was built in 1859-61 and has been Grade II listed building since 1959.

Church of St Peter, Ilton The Anglican Church of St Peter in Ilton, Somerset, was built in the 14th century. It incorporates fragments from 12th and 13th and is Grade II* listed building.

Merryfield, Ilton Merryfield is a historic estate in Ilton, near Ilminster in Somerset. It was the principal seat of the Wadham family, and was called by Prince (d. 1723) their “noble moated seat of Meryfeild”
