Huntsham history


Huntsham was held by the Saxon priest Alric before the Norman Conquest of 1066. It was held in demesne as one of the 24 holdings of Odo Son of Gamelin. According to the Domesday Book, by 1242 it had been held by. the de Stanton family, and in 1307 by Peter de Dunsland. The descent of the manor has been traced through the Bere family.

Huntsham Court is a Grade II* listed country house in Huntsham, Devon. Built in 1868–70, it was designed in the Tudor Gothic style by Benjamin Ferrey for Charles Troyte. It was then the home of his son and local MP, Sir Gilbert Acland Troyte. From 1978 until 2004 it was run as a hotel, it has since been used as a venue for weddings.
