Hotham is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is situated 16 miles (26 km) west of Hull, 21 miles (34 km) south east of York and 4 miles south of Market Weighton town centre. According to the 2011 UK census, the village had a population of 233, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 256. The church dedicated to St Oswald was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1966. Sir John Hotham, 1st Baronet, Governor of Hull, was knighted by King James I in 1641. His son John, also called John, was executed in December 1644. Sir John’s estate is now in the nearby village of South Dalton. A railway line once connected Hull, Beverley and York once connected.

The prison was operated by Her Majesty’s Prison Service, and was situated next-to-the-next-door to HMP Everthornorpe. The two neighbouring prisons were merged in 2014, and renamed HM Prison Humber.
