Holt formed part of the ancient hundred of Bradford, which was divided into civil parishes in 1894. Members of the Beaven family started a leather dressing factory at Holt in the 1770s. Mineral water was discovered in the late 17th century and bottled for sale from 1715. A spa was promoted at Holt but declined in 1815 following the discovery of mineral water at Melksham.

The Polebarn Hotel The Polebarn Hotel is Grade II* listed on the Historic England Register. It was built in 1789 by John Clark, a local textile mill owner and clergyman. It passed through successive generations of the Clark family until it was sold by auction in 1920 to Wiltshire County Council.
