Hilgay is derived from the Old English to mean ‘island or dry ground in a marsh’ It was notable in Saxon and early Norman times for the large numbers of fish and eels found there. Modney Priory built here by the monks of Ramsey Abbey was a Benedictine cell. The scholar and poet Phineas Fletcher (1580 -1650) became chaplain to Sir Henry Willoughby, who presented him in 1621 to the rectory of Hilgay, Norfolk.

Denver Windmill Denver Windmill is a Grade II* listed tower mill at Denver, Norfolk, England. The mill was built in the 1930s and is located in the city of Denver.

Ryston Hall Ryston Hall, Ryston, Norfolk, was built by Sir Roger Pratt in 1669 and 1672. The house was constructed in the Carolean style and is Grade II* listed.

St Mary’s Church, Fordham St Mary’s Church is located to the south of the village of Fordham, Norfolk. It is a redundant Anglican parish church in the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.

River Wissey The River Wissey rises near Bradenham, and flows for nearly 31 miles (50 km) to join the River Great Ouse at Fordham. Lower 11.2 miles (18.0 km) are navigable. Upper reaches are notable for a number of buildings of historic interest.
