Henstridge history

Yenston Priory was a 16th-century house of Benedictine monks. The village name means “the ridge where stallions are kept” The parish was part of the hundred of Horethorne.

Henstridge landmarks

Inwood House was built in 1881 by Welsh industrialist Thomas Merthyr Guest on the site of an earlier house. Guest married the writer Lady Theodora Guest who died here in 1924.

Church of St Mary, Abbas and Templecombe The Anglican Church of St Mary at Templecombe was built in the 12th century and is Grade II* listed building. It is part of the benefice of Abbas and Templecombe, Henstridge and Horsington within the archdeaconry of Wells.

Templecombe railway station Templecombe is 112 miles 2 chains (180.3 km) down the line from London Waterloo. The main station opened in 1860 but a smaller station on the lower line opened in 1862. It was closed in 1966 but reopened in 1983 following local community pressure.

Church of St Nicholas, Henstridge The Church of St Nicholas in Henstridge, Somerset, was built in the 12th century. It is a Grade II* listed building.
