Heddington history


On King’s Play Hill, east of Heddington village, are a Neolithic long barrow and two bowl barrows. The northern boundary of the parish follows the Roman road from London to Bath. A small estate called Splatts originated with land purchases in 1620s by Robert Child, whose son Francis was the founder of one of the first London banks, Child & Co.

The Battle of Roundway Down was fought on 13 July 1643 near Devizes, in Wiltshire. A Royalist cavalry force under Lord Wilmot won a crushing victory over the Parliamentarian Army of the West. Viewed as their most decisive victory of the war, the Royalists secured control of South West England.
