The settlement of Heaton Mersey is rooted in the local industry which developed in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The main industrial change for the area was the development of the Upper and Lower Bleachworks. The first works were built by the industrialist Samuel Oldknow, and his brother, in 1785.
