Hayes is formed of what originally were five separate villages: Botwell, Hayes Town, Hayes End, Wood End and Yeading. The name Hayes Town has come to be applied to the area around Station Road between Coldharbour Lane and Hayes & Harlington railway station.

Industry

Hayes has been the home of EMI, Nestlé and H. J. Heinz Company . Past companies include Fairey Aviation (later merged with Westland), and HMV .

Churches

St Mary the Virgin Church, Hayes on Church Road is the oldest building in Hayes . The central portion of the church, the chancel and the nave, was built in the 13th century . The north aisle in the 15th century (as was the tower), and the south aisle, along with the lychgate and the porch, are Grade II listed .

Hayes has had six cinemas in its history . The town’s first cinema, in the silent era, opened in 1913, and was named simply The Hayes Cinema . The Regent Cinema stood between 1924 and 1938 at 16 Station Road, Hayes – now the site of a branch of NatWest bank . The Corinth Cinema opened in 1933 at 1040 Uxbridge Road . It was the first cinema in Hayes to be equipped with CinemaScope and stereophonic sound .

Hayes FM (91.8 FM) is the town’s community-focused, non-commercial local radio station . The station provides a platform for discussion of local matters . Since “Hayes, Middlesex” is famously present on the reverse of the Beatles’ 1960s LPs, it is appropriate to boast Europe’s longest running Beatles-themed radio show .

Hayes, Hillingdon etymology

The place-name Hayes comes from the Anglo-Saxon Hǣs or H Hǣse: “(land overgrown with) brushwood” In the Domesday book (1086), it is spelt Hfsa. In the 1628 entry in an Inquisition post mortem held at The National Archives.

Cranford Park Cranford Countryside Park is a 144-acre public park in Cranford, in the London Borough of Hillingdon . Situated in close proximity to Heathrow Airport, it is bordered by the M4 Motorway to the north, the A312 trunk road to the east and the towns of Harlington and Cranford to the South West and South East respectively .

Southall rail crash The Southall rail crash occurred on 19 September 1997, on the Great Western Main Line at Southall, west London. An InterCity 125 high speed passenger train failed to slow down in response to warning signals and collided with a freight train crossing its path. The signaller was unaware that the automatic warning system had been turned off in the cab of the express.

Beck Theatre The Beck Theatre is a 600-seat theatre in Hayes, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It was built in 1977 at a cost of £2.5 million.

Elthorne Hundred Elthorne was a hundred (ancient subdivision) of the historic county of Middlesex, England. The hundred’s name means ‘thorn bush of Ella’
