The name Hampton may come from the Anglo-Saxon words hamm meaning an enclosure in the bend of a river and ton meaning farmstead or settlement. The combined population of the Hamptons was 37,131 at the 2001 census. The ten years to 1911 saw the highest percentage of population increase. Hampton and Hampton Wick were Urban Districts from 1894 to 1937.
