The villages name means ‘Gyldi’s fortification’ Guilsborough is made up of two hamlets, now joined. The former referring to the Roman fort, or referencing the earlier Late Bronze Age/Iron Age Enclosure on the same site. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

A church at Guilsborough is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), but there is no evidence of an Anglo-Saxon church remaining. The church was possibly a minster of Brixworth, which is one of the oldest remaining Saxon churches in England.
