Greenford was an ancient parish in the historic Elthorne Hundred, county of Middlesex. Greenford is one of several ancient parishes in the Elthorn Hundred.

Industrial

Greenford is considered to be birthplace of the modern organic chemical industry . William Perkin’s chemical factory in North Greenford, by the Grand Union Canal, discovered the world’s first aniline dye in March 1856 . Queen Elizabeth I would only eat bread made from wheat grown in Greenford .

J. Lyons and Co.

J Lyons and Co. were looking for a secondary site on which to expand production beyond Cadby Hall, Hammersmith . In 1921 they bought the first piece of an eventual 63 acres (25 ha) site . Location close to good transport links from both the Grand Union Canal and the Great Western Railway’s Great Western Main Line .

Art and culture

The Who were introduced to the audience of the Oldfield Tavern as the Who in 1964 . The group met a drummer there called Keith Moon at the pub . The tavern has since been replaced by a small block of flats and a Texaco petrol station .

Greenford toponymy

The name is first recorded in 848 as Grenan forda. It is formed from the Old English ‘grēne’ and ‘ford’ and means ‘place at the green ford’ Greenford was known as Great Greenford to distinguish it from Little Greenford.

Southall rail crash The Southall rail crash occurred on 19 September 1997, on the Great Western Main Line at Southall, west London. An InterCity 125 high speed passenger train failed to slow down in response to warning signals and collided with a freight train crossing its path. The signaller was unaware that the automatic warning system had been turned off in the cab of the express.

Elthorne Hundred Elthorne was a hundred (ancient subdivision) of the historic county of Middlesex, England. The hundred’s name means ‘thorn bush of Ella’
