Great Smeaton history
Great Smeaton is about halfway between Darlington and Northallerton. It once stood on the route of the Great North Road between London and Edinburgh. Many armies have passed through the village over the years, including that of William the Conqueror. Anne of Denmark had dinner at the village on her way to London from Edinburgh.
