Land at Alne was given by Coenwulf, King of the Mercians, about 809 to his newly founded abbey of Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire. It remained in the hands of the monastery until the dissolution, when it passed to the crown, who leased it to the Throckmortons of Coughton until 1599.
