Gorebridge history

The village got its name from the bridge across the River Gore, a tributary of the South Esk. It was the home of Scotland’s first gunpowder mill, Stobsmill, at the Gore Water, that started operating in 1794 and closed in 1875. In the 1860s century a coal mine called Emily Pit was opened, the village grew as miners came and a railway was built to take the coal from the mine.

Crichton Collegiate Church Crichton Collegiate Church is situated about 0.6 miles (0.97 km) south-west of the hamlet of Crichon in Midlothian, Scotland .

National Mining Museum Scotland The National Mining Museum Scotland was created in 1984 to preserve the physical surface remains of Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, Midlothian, Scotland. The colliery, sunk by the Lothian Coal Company in 1890, came into production in 1894. It was nationalised in 1947 and closed in 1981.

Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church is located to the south of the town of Bonnyrigg in Midlothian, Scotland. It is a congregation of the Church of Scotland. The current arrangement dates from 1975, when the two churches were united. The church’s tower is unusually tall for a comparatively small church and its design was copied for Kilconquhar Parish Church in Fife.

Newbyres Castle Newbyres Castle was a 16th-century tower house, in Gorebridge, Midlothian, Scotland. The tower occupied a roughly triangular position, which was naturally defended by deeply worn water-courses.
