The buried remains of a large Roman fort exist on the eastern bank of the River Dee. The fort was built in 81 AD by the Governor Gnaeus Julius Agricola and enclosed an area roughly 7 acres (2.8 ha) During World War II Glenlochar was the site of a training camp for the construction of Bailey bridges.

Etymologically speaking, Glenlochar may be connected to the ancient name Loukopibía. The first part of the name is either Brittonic glïnn- (Welsh glyn) or Gaelic gleann, both meaning “a valley”, anglicised as Scots glen.

Glenlochar photo Threave Castle
Threave Castle is situated on an island in the River Dee, 2.5km west of Castle Douglas in Kirkcudbrightshire. Built in the 1370s by Archibald the Grim, it was a stronghold of the “Black Douglases”, Earls of Douglas and Lords of Galloway. The excessive power of the Black Douglas lords led to their overthrow by King James II in 1455. For part of this time the castle was controlled by Princess Margaret, daughter of King Robert III.
