Fovant history


The name is derived from the Old English Fobbefunta, meaning ‘spring of a man called Fobbe’ The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded a settlement called Febefonte with 22 households. The abbey was surrendered to the Crown in 1539, and Fovant was among the villages granted to Sir William Herbert, later Earl of Pembroke.

Chilmark Quarries (grid reference ST974312) is a 9.65 hectare biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Wiltshire, England. Its importance as a home for bats led to the site being designated in 2005 as a European Special Area of Conservation.
Fovant photo Philipps House
Philipps House was built in 1816 by William Wyndham to the designs of Sir Jeffry Wyatville, replacing a 17th-century house. In 1916 the estate was bought by Bertram Philipps, who renamed the house after himself. The house and grounds are Grade II* listed.

Chiselbury is the site of an Iron Age univallate hillfort located in Wiltshire. The hillfort is sub-circular in plan, and encloses an area of approximately 10.5 acres (460,000 sq ft) It is defined by an earthen rampart up to 3.6 metres (12 ft) in height and an external ditch. The site is a scheduled national monument no.1020262.
