Early history

Medieval Flixton was one of several parishes which existed in the Hundred of Salford. The area may have been inhabited during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Stone axes have been found on the banks of the River Mersey and on the River Irwell. The parish comprised isolated farmsteads and a medieval manor house, rather than a village centre.

Industrial Revolution

Flixton played an important part in the early campaigns for public rights of way. It was a remote rural area with few transport links to nearby towns, the rivers Irwell and Mersey for the most part cutting off access to other areas. The area did not experience the level of industrialisation seen in towns like Ashton-under-Lyne.

Frances Lennon was the official artist for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. She was awarded an MBE by Prince Charles for her contribution to arts and charity.

Religion

Historically church life has centred around the Grade II* listed 12th-century St Michaels Church. For about 500 years the church was attached to Lichfield Cathedral. Flixton’s Catholic Community worships at St Monica’s Church on Woodsend Road South.

Flixton, Greater Manchester etymology

The name may be Scandinavian in origin, the Anglo-Saxon ton meaning a farmstead. It is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey and first appears in historical records in 1176 or 1177.

Flixton House was the focus of one of the first footpath battles in England after its owner, Ralph Wright, in 1824 closed several footpaths crossing his estate. The case attracted considerable interest and in 1826 the Manchester Society for the Preservation of Ancient Footpaths was formed. After several years of expensive legal wrangling, Wright’s order was quashed and in June 1827.

Flixton House Flixton House was built in 1806 by the Wright family, who had become wealthy land owners. Ralph Wright in 1826 closed several footpaths across his estate, which the public had until then been allowed access to. In response to the closure, the people of Flixon initiated and funded a court case against Wright, one of the first footpath battles in England.

St Michael’s Church, Flixton St Michael’s Church, Flixton, Greater Manchester, is an Anglican parish church dedicated to Michael the Archangel. It lies in the Diocese of Manchester, in the Anglican Diocese previously in Lichfield.

Trafford Training Centre Trafford Training Centre is the training ground and academy headquarters of English football club Manchester United F.C. It is near the village of Carrington, Greater Manchester, and replaced The Cliff as the club’s training ground in 2000. The main building was opened and the first team moved in in 2000, followed by the Academy facility in 2002.

Irlam (ward) Irlam is an electoral ward of Salford, England. It is represented in Westminster by Barbara Keeley MP for Worsley and Eccles South.
