The earliest proprietors of the village (and then manor) on record were the family of “Fissebourne” There are a number of theories on how the village got its name. The name derives from the Saxon words “Fisc” meaning fish and “Bourne” meaning brook.

Fishburn Brass Band was started by local miners as the Fishburn Colliery Welfare band in the 1950s. The band have won several high-profile contests including the Scottish Open Champions in 2005 and the Durham County Brass Band League. Manor House in Sedgefield, County Durham was built in 1707 on high ground in a country setting looking on to St. Edmund’s Church. It is a rare example of Queen Anne style architecture in an area as far north as the north of Durham. The house was acquired by John Burdon of nearby Hardwick Estate in 1756.

It had a population of about 87,000 (2001 UK census) Its largest town was Newton Aycliffe, but its other places included Shildon, Ferryhill and Spennymoor. Most of the district was represented in parliament by Tony Blair, who became Leader of the Labour Party in 1994 and Prime Minister in 1997.
