In the Domesday book, the village was known as Ferentone. The second part of the name is believed to come from the Gournays, its ancient possessors, including Robert de Gournay in 1225. An unmanned railway station existed in the village from 11 July 1927 to 2 November 1959.

Litton Reservoirs
