Etchingham history

Long before the Norman conquest of 1066 Etchingham was a moated manor house. The manor stood at the point now occupied by the London to Hastings railway line. Some of the stone from the manor was likely used in the construction of the station buildings.

Etymology

Etchingham is probably derived from Old English, and roughly translates as “The homestead or enclosure of family and followers of a man called Ecchi” In a place name, “inga” usually refers to ‘people of’ or ‘dwellers at’, and ‘ham’ to a homestead. A second possible derivation of the name is that it could come from Anglo-Saxon “ecen”, meaning great and “ham” (homestead)

The church

The 14th-century parish church is dedicated to The Assumption of Blessed Mary and St Nicholas. On its spire is what is probably England’s oldest brass weather vane.

Village sign

The design of the village sign is based on the de Etchingham family coat of arms. A similar design is used for the parish council logo and the church weathervane.

Famous residents

Among the famous former residents of Etchingham is the regicide James Temple. Haremere Hall was later owned by the second Sir John Lade, a notorious gambler and close friend of the Prince Regent. The novelist and critic Anthony Burgess lived in a semi-detached house called Applegarth.

Bethel Strict Baptist Chapel, Robertsbridge Bethel Strict Baptist Chapel was erected in 1842 on the initiative of James Weller, a “somewhat remarkable man” The chapel closed in about 1999 and permission was granted for its conversion into a house. English Heritage has designated it a Grade II Listed building.

The Seven Stars Inn The Seven Stars Inn is a 14th-century public house in Robertsbridge, East Sussex. It is associated with historical events, both real and rumoured. As of autumn 2016, it was closed for business.

Robertsbridge United Reformed Church Robertsbridge United Reformed Church was built for Congregational worshippers in 1881. It was the third Nonconformist place of worship in the village. English Heritage has listed the church at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.

Bateman’s Bateman’s is a 17th-century house located in Burwash, East Sussex. It was the home of Rudyard Kipling from 1902 until his death in 1936. Kipling’s widow Caroline bequeathed the house to the National Trust in 1939.

Haremere Hall Haremere Hall is a Grade I listed Jacobean building near Etchingham, East Sussex. It was built in the 17th century and is now a Grade II listed Grade I building. It is located in the village of Haremere in East Sussex.
