Early Emsworth

Emsworth began as a Saxon village. At first it was linked to the settlement of Warblington nearby. People from Emsworth worshipped at St Peter’s Chapel or in the church at Warblington.

18th and 19th centuries

Emsworth was known for shipbuilding, boat building and rope making. Grain from the area was ground into flour by tidal mills and transported by ship to places such as London and Portsmouth. Queen Victoria visited the town in 1842, resulting in Queen Street and Victoria Road being named after her. The River Ems flows into the Slipper millpond and is now used as offices.

Modern Emsworth

By 1901 the population of Emsworth was about 2,000. It grew rapidly during the 20th century to about 5,000 by the middle of the century. In 1902 the oyster industry went into rapid decline after guests at mayoral banquets in Southampton and Winchester became seriously ill and four died after consuming oysters. During the Second World War, nearby Thorney Island was used as a Royal Air Force station.

Havant War Memorial Hospital Havant War Memorial Hospital was a health facility in Crossway in Havant, Hampshire. It was managed by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Thorney Island (West Sussex) Thorney Island is an island (effectively a peninsula) that juts into Chichester Harbour in West Sussex. It is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel called the Great Deep.

Hollybank House, Emsworth Hollybank House near Emsworth in Hampshire is Grade II listed on the English Heritage Register. It was built in about 1825 and was home to many notable residents over the next two centuries. Today it is a Country House B&B and caters for special events including weddings.

Warblington Castle Warblington Castle was a moated manor near Langstone in Havant parish, Hampshire. Most of the castle was destroyed during the English Civil War, leaving only a single gate tower, part of a wall, and a gateway.

St Thomas à Becket Church, Warblington St Thomas à Becket Church is the Church of England parish church of Warblington in Hampshire. It was founded in the Saxon era, and some Anglo-Saxon architecture survives. The church is Grade I listed, the highest grade, for its architectural and historical importance.
