Elstow history


Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror, founded a Benedictine nunnery in Elstow in 1078. The nuns came from wealthy families and each came with an endowment of money and/or lands. On 26 August 1539, the Abbess was forced to surrender the Abbey, the manor and all the Abbey’s other lands and estates to King Henry VIII.

Bedford Cauldwell Walk depot is a maintenance depot on the Midland Main Line. A four road maintenance depot opened in 2004 to service trains, and was extended to a fifth road in 2009. The depot maintenance facility is currently mothballed. It is still in use for 12 car sidings for Class 700 rolling stock.
