The place-name Dufton is first attested in 1289 and means ‘dove town or farmstead’ The Quaker-owned London Lead Company developed the village through the construction of housing, a school, a library and the installation of piped water. Appleby Horse Fair The Appleby Horse Fair, also known as Appleby New Fair, is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria, England. The horse fair is held each year in early June, attracting roughly 10,000 Gypsy and Traveller attendees.
