Droxford history

The Manor of Drocenesforda (Droxford) was granted to the Prior and monks of St. Swithun, Winchester, by King Egbert in 826. During the late 5th and early 6th centuries, the Jutes inhabited the Meon Valley, and at Droxford there is the remains of a large Jutish cemetery that has produced various grave goods, providing evidence of their settlement.

Church and landowner poverty relief

Droxford had legacies since the late 17th century and medium legacies relative to its small population since the 1850s for its poorest residents. In 1850 James George Boucher bequeathed to the rector and churchwardens a sum by 1905 growing to £190 18s. 7d. In 1905 the dividends, amounting to £5+11/30 a year, were applied with the similar-size Boucher charity.

Droxford geography / climate

The village is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) east of Bishop’s Waltham. It is entirely on the lower half of the western slopes of the Meon valley. Farms and residential outbuildings stretch to the west, north and south. The non-dualled, non-trunk A32 passes through the village between Gosport and Alton which is largely bypassed by two motorways.

Church of St Mary and All Saints, Droxford Church of St Mary and All Saints is Grade I listed in Droxford, Hampshire. It is in the Diocese of Portsmouth and is one of the churches of the Meon Bridge Benefice. The earliest parts of the church date from the Norman period.

Church of Saint Barnabas, Swanmore The Church of St Barnabas is the Church of England parish church of Swanmore near Southampton in Hampshire. It was constructed in 1844 and is a grade II listed building.

Old Winchester Hill Old Winchester Hill is a 66.2-hectare (164-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Hampshire. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and national nature reserve. Part of it is a scheduled monument.

Corhampton Church Corhampton Church is one of the churches of the Meon Bridge Benefice. It is in the Diocese of Portsmouth. The building, dating from the early 11th century is Grade I listed.
