Disley history


Its Anglo-Saxon name was Dystiglegh, meaning “wood or clearing by a mound” or possibly “windy settlement” In the 13th century, in the time of Edward I, there are references to confirmatory grants of land made to Jordan de Dystelegh of Disley Hall. The village had at least one cotton mill by the mid-19th century. As of 2005 there is a paper mill and some light engineering works, but most people travel out to work.

Mellor Mill, also known as Bottom’s Mill, was a cotton mill in Marple, Greater Manchester built by Samuel Oldknow in 1793. It was a six-storey, 42-foot wide and 210-foot (64 m) long mill. It reached its peak production in 1804, when 10,080 spindles were operating.
