Dingestow history


The village was once the site of a Norman motte and bailey sited to control this part of the Welsh Marches by the incoming Marcher Lords. It was later replaced by a larger, stone-built one, which was attacked by Hywel ap Iorwerth, the Welsh lord of Caerleon, in 1182.

The Hendre, (Welsh: Yr Hendre a farmer’s winter residence; literally meaning old home) in Rockfield is the only full-scale Victorian country house in Monmouthshire, Wales. Built in the eighteenth century as a shooting box, it was vastly expanded by the Rolls family in three stages during the nineteenth century. The house is Grade II* listed and is now the clubhouse of the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club.
