The name Cwmhiraeth is of Welsh origin, cwm translating to ‘valley’ The hamlet takes its name from Hiraeth, a former Common nearby. It was settled as part of the wool industry, making flannel. The National Wool Museum now records the history of the area. The mill used water power from the Nant Brân stream, which flows through its valley.

The Llandyfriog transmitting station is located on high ground several kilometres east of the town of Newcastle Emlyn, Ceredigion, South Wales.
