Cranborne dates from Saxon times and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Creneburne, meaning stream (bourne) of cranes. In the 10th century the Benedictine abbey known as Cranborne Abbey was founded by a knight. The priory was fully subject to Tewkesbury Abbey until the dissolution of the abbey in 1540.
