Coxhoe history


Bronze Age axe is the earliest artefact to have been found in the area. Coxhoe developed during the 18th and 19th centuries, spurred by coal mining. The area only really developed in the medieval period.

Coxhoe Hall

Coxhoe Hall was a five-bay, 2+1/2-story house of c. 1725, built for John Burdon, on the site of a Tudor house. Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning spent her early childhood there. The house was bought by the East Hetton Colliery Company in 1938 and was used to house Italian and German prisoners-of-war in WW2.

It is situated about 1 km east of Ferryhill, between the East Coast Main Line railway and the A1(M) road. The site has one of the most important expanses of primary magnesian limestone grassland in Great Britain.
