Cowlam history
Cowlam in 1066 was in the Hundred of Toreshou and contained 5.6 households and 3 ploughlands. In 1066 the lordship was held by Ketilbert, who held thirteen manors in the north of Yorkshire. Cowlam was previously a Bronze Age encampment, evidenced by earthworks, and a later medieval village that was deserted in the late 17th century.

Eleanor Cross, Sledmere
The tall stone structure was constructed by the Sykes family of Sledmere, East Riding of Yorkshire. Engraved monumental brasses were added after the First World War, converting the cross into a war memorial.
Wagoners’ Memorial
The Wagoners’ Memorial was designed by Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet and built in 1919–20. It became a Grade II listed building in 1966, upgraded to Grade I in 2016.
