Clarkston was established in the 1790s when a toll point was set up on the main route from Paisley to East Kilbride. The Maxwell family advertised the creation of a new village there in 1801, but initially, it grew slowly. Clarkston expanded rapidly in the 20th century as new suburban housing developments sprang up.
