Christon Bank history


Christon Bank is named after the Christon (originally Cryston) family, who were local yeoman farmers and members of the Quakers movement. The farm was further expanded in the 19th century as it embraced the onset of modern farming methods such as new fertilisers, drainage and machinery. The predominance of farming in the locality led to the setting up of commercial lime production in the area in the early part of the. 19th. century. The site of the lime kilns is 500 metres (1,600 ft) south-east of the village.

In 1395, the tower was built to protect the minister and church goers of Embleton’s Church of the Holy Trinity after a raid by the Scots. The first vicarage was provided by Merton College, Oxford, who held the patronage of the parish, in 1332. The present building includes a house built in about 1828, adjoining the tower.
