Chineham history

Chineham was first recorded in the Domesday Book as Chineam in Basingestoch Hundred – Hantescire in 1086. The suffix “ham’s” name may suggest a farm or enclosure, and Coates suggests “Chine” is derived from the Old English ‘cinu’ which means a ‘ravine or rift’ By 1848 the village had developed into a tiny hamlet with 34 inhabitants. The Berks and Hants Railway was opened crossing the Basingstoke to Reading road nearby.

Chineham geography / climate

The parish is bounded on the west by the Reading to Basingstoke railway line. It is bordered on the east by the A33. The newer development of Sherfield Park to the north is a separate parish.

Eastrop Park Eastrop Park is a public park located in the east of Basingstoke, Hampshire. The park features a large boating lake, a miniature golf course, a café and walking trails. The River Loddon flows through the park, feeding into a balancing pond.

Willis Museum Willis Museum is a local history museum in the Market Place, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. The building, which was the headquarters of the Borough Council, is a Grade II listed building.

Bullsdown Camp Bullsdown Camp is the site of a former Iron Age plateau fort in Hampshire. The site is heavily wooded and close inspection is required to observe the three bank and ditch fortifications. Although eroded heavily the earthworks are still impressive.

River Lyde (Hampshire) The River Lyde or Lyde River is a small river in Hampshire. It rises near Mapledurwell, where the water is used in watercress beds. It flows in a generally northerly direction, and used to supply power to watermills along its route.

Bramley Training Area Bramley Training Area is a British Army training camp, located south of the village of Bramley, Hampshire. Opened during World War I as an ammunition depot, the site now comprises a field training area and an Army Reserve Centre.

St. Swithun’s, Nately Scures St Swithun’s Church is the smallest ancient Church of England parish church in Hampshire. Newnham and Nately Scures are part of the Anglican United Parish which includes: Greywell, Mapledurwell and Up Nately.

St. Michael’s Church, Basingstoke St. Michael’s Church is a notable Anglican parish church in Basingstoke, Hampshire. It is located in the lower part of the town, near its centre, towards its northern end of Church Street.

Sherfield on Loddon Sherfield on Loddon is a village and civil parish in the English county of Hampshire. It is located at grid reference SU680580, approximately 12 miles (19 km) south of Reading and 6 miles (10 km) north of Basingstoke. At the 2001 census it had a population of 1,594. This had increased to 1,644 at the 2011 Census, with a further 1,463 assigned to the Sherfield Park development.
