Chideock history


In 1086 Chideock was recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Cidihoc’ During the Middle Ages ownership passed to the Catholic Arundell family, who used it to provide refuge for priests and loyal followers during subsequent religious persecution. Four local Catholic men were martyred in the late 16th century; their trial took place in the main hall of what is now Chideck House Hotel and they were executed in Dorchester.

Chideock is 2.5 miles west of Bridport, 5 miles east of Lyme Regis and 0.75 miles inland from the English Channel. The parish includes the coastal hamlet of Seatown, less than 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site.

Chideock photo Church of St Candida and Holy Cross
The Church of St Candida and Holy Cross is an Anglican church in Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset. A Saxon church stood on the site but nothing remains of that structure. The earliest parts of the church date from the 12th century when it was rebuilt by Benedictine monks. Further major rebuilding work took place in the 13th century and in the 14th century the church’s tower was constructed.
