Chewton Mendip history


Chewton Mendip is the site of Attborough Swallet, a cave which is not in limestone but instead in Dolomitic Conglomerate and Marl. The village used to have a Gothic style mansion built for the Waldegrave family before 1791, however all that remains is an 18th-century lodge. The Mendip Engineering Company Ltd was founded in the early 19th century as Cutler’s Green Ironworks.

Chewton Mendip photo Emborough Quarries
Emborough Quarries (grid reference ST623505) is a 1 hectare (2.5 acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest at Emborough in the Mendip Hills, Somerset. The disused quarry has yielded a wide variety of remains of vertebrate fossils, amongst which the early reptiles are particularly well represented. Of special note is Kuehneosaurus latus which is one of the earliest-known flying vertebrates.

Litton Reservoirs are two reservoirs near the village of Litton, Somerset. They lie on the boundary between Bath and North East Somerset and Mendip districts. The individual lakes are called Lower Litton and Upper Litton. The former is 8 acres (32,000m) in size, the latter is 16 acres (65,000 m) and much deeper.
