Cheam is mentioned in the Charters of Chertsey Abbey in 727. The name ‘Cegeham’ may mean ‘village or homestead by the tree-stumps’ Cheam appears in Domesday Book as Ceiham. The modern London Road at North Cheam follows the course of the Roman road through the area.
